11th October 2010
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It’s great to be back at school again with the final ten-week term ahead of us! The Junior Team has planned some really exciting and varied learning opportunities for students this term. The first of these are ballet workshops which will be held in the hall, watching The Royal New Zealand Ballet present “The Nut Cracker” at St James Theatre in Wellington, Junior Athletics, EOTC week and a Christmas concert.
This term our major Inquiry topic is a technology unit entitled “Moving in our Playground”. The students will be exploring the forces of movement to help them design their ideal school playground, they will make models of new equipment for their playground and use their models to explain how equipment is both fun and safe to use.
Our foci for Writing this term are letter writing using the correct format, recounts and writing poetry using adjectives, nouns and verbs to make their poetry interesting.
In Mathematics, children will be learning about volume and capacity, exploring number knowledge and strengthening their number strategies.
Our Art topic this term is printmaking. We will be using a range of materials to follow a procedure for using printing equipment so that their work stays clean. They will evaluate their own work and other’s art.
Our Sports focus for this term is athletics. This involves moving in different ways, having fun moving, challenging themselves, sharing space and equipment and reflecting on the game. The students will be learning and practicing athletic skills for a Junior Athletics event in Week 5. Our focus for fitness this term will be Jump Jam in the hall on Mondays, Tuesday’s and Fridays. On Wednesdays and Thursdays students will be using a range of equipment to learn and practice skills needed for games. Please ensure your child is at school by the 8.40 bell so they can take part in the class fitness programme.
This term the children will be using laptops to reinforce ICT skills they have been learning throughout the year such as drawing & typing on Kidpix, using a mouse to navigate, point, click and drag, access class blogs and leaving a comment.
In Te Reo we will be gaining a greater confidence in using Te Reo Maori in a range of contexts by speaking and responding to a range of common sentence structures. Students will be counting and reading numbers, saying and identifying Nga Tae (colours), and using the correct days of the week.
Our Friday enrichment programme will also expose students to Maori Legends & Kapa Haka skills such as singing and dancing.
Homework
