Term 3 - August 2011

Dear Parents and Caregivers

It’s great to be back at school again with a ten week term ahead of us. Our Junior team has planned some really exciting and varied learning opportunities for students this term.

This term, our major Inquiry topic is entitled ‘Mighty Magnets’ and is a technology focus. Our big idea for our topic is using magnets in our daily lives so we are going to design, construct and evaluate a suitable magnet. We are going to further investigate how magnets work, what we can stick them to and are they strong enough to hold our spelling rockets and basic facts carriages homework on the fridge.

Our focus for Writing this term is fairy tale innovations, recounts and explanations. The children will be learning how to sequence events in a story and add interest to their stories by using adjectives, nouns and verbs. They will also be using different forms of punctuation and working on proof reading their work.

In Mathematics, the children will be learning about Money. They will also be exposed to number knowledge and strategies with a focus on addition and subtraction, multiplication and division.

Our Art topic this term is mixed media. The children will be using a variety of media in their artwork and learning how to follow a process to create layers.

Our Physical Education focus for this term will be large ball activities and skipping as well as continuing with folk dancing. Some of the large ball skills the students will be learning will be how to confidently bounce, dribble, pass and catch a ball. In the second part of the term they will be learning a variety of jumping techniques using a skipping rope. We will continue to have Jumpjam three times a week from 8.40 a.m. but they will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The children will continue to be using laptops to achieve specific ICT skills, such as, word processing, create a new post on the class Blogs, take a digital photo and use Kidpix to create slide shows or pictures. Each class has a Classroom Blog so please check these on a regular basis and post a comment on our Blogs. I know the students and teacher enjoy reading these! If you are unsure as to how to post a comment please don’t hesitate to ask.

Please feel free to speak or email your child’s classroom teacher with your queries and celebrations.

Yours in partnership,
