Kia Ora and Welcome to Term 3!
Another busy term of learning has been planned for our students. A warm welcome to those new families who have joined us since the last newsletter. We have started our next new entrant room in room 4 with Mrs Liz Sullivan as the teacher. We also welcome Mrs Chantel Lyons to our Korora team as she is now teaching in room 3.Thank you so much to those parents, caregivers and other family members who came along to school for our 'Celebration of Learning.' I do hope that you were able to see how much progress your child has achieved in the first six months of this year and enjoyed them sharing their learning with you. Last term the students really enjoyed the inquiry about fair testing and the activities about Matariki and also taking part in the moveMprove gymnastic programme.
The '100' days at school celebration was lots of fun and students from rooms 1, 3, 5 and 6 enjoyed exploring about one hundred in a myriad of ways throughout the day in a variety of curriculum areas not just in numeracy. They are now counting backwards to zero and should get to that in time for Christmas. Thank you very much for supporting this in any way e.g. sending along collections and food for the different class celebrations.
We are trialling a new format for written reports and would appreciate any feedback from you around this. Students from rooms 1, 3, 5 and 6 will get a report this time along with students in room 2 who started school during term 1. The rest of the students in room 2 and those new ones in room 4 will have six week conferences with their teachers and will get a written report at the end of the year.
This term
Literacy - Our foci in writing during the term will be on innovations, recounts and retelling. Students will be working on sequencing events into a beginning, middle and ending along with varying their sentence beginnings to hook in the reader. They will also be adding adjectives and verbs to make their stories more interesting. Spelling programmes continue in each class working on the most frequently used words with Year 2 students continuing to work on their spelling rockets. Reading happens throughout the day in a variety of ways including teacher reading, visits to the libraries, reading rotations, enlarged texts and poems to students reading independently and also with their teacher. They bring home a book to share with you each day and a poem on Friday.Numeracy - This term the students are involved in number recognition, addition and subtraction basic facts, money and geometry along with problem solving activities.
Inquiry - Our school wide inquiry has a focus on Sustainability and involves social science and the arts. It is entitled - Te Ora i Te Huringa - Living the change. The world is in our hands. The concept involves learning to think and act in ways that safeguard the well being of people and the planet. The big idea is - to have a positive outcome we need to explore the effect of our connections and contributions. The key understandings will be that we explore the consequences of our actions on the world and the alternatives and we contribute through our actions to a better future.
We will be visiting Zealandia as part of this as we can share with the students what New Zealand used to look like, what has happened to wildlife since and how this is being rectified.
The Arts - this term we are working on mixed media, photography and movie making in particular in Visual Arts. In Performing Arts we will be learning new songs and dances which will culminate in our big school wide production at the end of the term.
Physical Education - We will continue with fitness on a daily basis with Jumpjam returning to the hall on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The focus for Physical Education will be in learning to skip both with and without a rope and to perform many different steps with a rope. Later in the term we will be focusing upon large ball skills.
